Trust Under Pressure: Leadership Lessons from My Ski Accident

I've Never Had

A Fall Like That.

Lessons learned from skiing.

A snowy mountain valley with trees and a road

I’ve never had a fall like that. One moment, I was skiing down a familiar double black diamond run in Utah, and the next, I was airborne. Looking uphill, I saw both skis resting perfectly parallel on the snow, exactly as they’d been just before I unexpectedly launched out of them. A buried branch had triggered a gymnastic maneuver that ended abruptly when my left boot struck an Aspen tree. I felt an immediate, rapid swelling in my ski boot. This was really bad.

Within minutes, ski patrol arrived, their calm professionalism was instantly reassuring. They carefully placed my leg into a splint and moved me onto a sled. It was clear each team member knew exactly what to do and trusted each other to handle their roles effectively. As they guided the sled down the steep terrain—one patrol member in front and another behind—every turn was carefully planned, communicated clearly, and executed flawlessly until we safely reached the mountain base.

That trust continued seamlessly through each stage of my care—from ski patrol handoff to ambulance EMTs, emergency room nurses and doctors, and finally to the surgical team. Every interaction featured clear communication and mutual respect, making a challenging situation remarkably smooth. My leg had been surgically repaired less than 8 hours after the accident.

Reflecting on this experience, I realized how closely these lessons align with principles I apply with my clients:

  1. Trust Matters Most: In emergencies, there isn't time for second-guessing. Trust empowers teams to act swiftly and confidently.
  2. Calm Under Pressure: The ski patrol’s calmness influenced my emotional state positively. Leaders similarly set the tone for their teams, especially under challenging circumstances.
  3. Anticipation and Preparedness: Each medical professional anticipated my needs at every stage, demonstrating the power of proactive preparedness—something successful teams consistently practice.
  4. Effective Communication: Clear and direct communication between ski patrol, EMTs, and hospital staff was key to a smooth transition and effective care. In business, clear communication helps avoid confusion and keeps teams aligned.
  5. Decisiveness and Action: Rapid, thoughtful decisions from medical professionals underscored how crucial decisive action is during a crisis. Businesses similarly benefit from leaders who confidently make informed decisions.

At Inflection Point Solutions, I emphasize building high-trust environments, clear communication, calmness under pressure, preparedness, and decisive action. My skiing accident was a powerful reminder of how these principles truly matter when unexpected challenges arise.

I encourage you to consider your own teams—are you prepared to handle your next unexpected challenge with trust, clarity, and decisive action?
